Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
